Dane on the Move

This is my second photo of the dogs at Bruce Pit. I haven't actually taken a lot of shots of the dogs yet, but I'm really happy with the few that I have. I love the sense of motion that is captured here. It's hard to make a photo of a dog something other than just a cute picture.

Sugar Coated Frosted Flakes

The first frost of the season hit the Ottawa area last weekend. Baba's Garden was coated in a sugar dusting of frost that made everything look like candy in the early morning light.

Grasshopper

Small things are beautiful too. I dedicate this image to my good friend D. Muffin.

Autumn Landscapes Bruce Pits

I took these shots on Thanksgiving weekend. I find them almost surreal, reminding me of post cards from the 1950s or factory-made paintings on textured canvas. I love the retro look of the colour palette and the "constructed" look of the landscape making the photos oddly beautiful and solemn at the same time. The Canada Geese in the background add a special touch.

Bullrushes

Werewolf

This is the first portrait of a dog that I took at Bruce Pits. Bruce Pits is one of the themes of this photo blog and in Bruce Pits there is an extensive and very popular dog park. I'm very much attracted to dogs and have done extensive portraits of dogs in Cuba in a series called La Isla de los Perritos Perditos. I think it's a powerful portrait that captures the mysterious ambience of autumn, when the pre-winter cold comes and kills of f the lush growth of summer, leading us up to Halloween when ghosts and supernatural beasts are celebrated.

Coming in for a Landing

I was out taking photos in the Bruce Pits yesterday when I heard these geese coming in for a landing. With my eye behind the lens focusing on another subject, I just moved my lens towards the honking and snapped the camera. When I glanced at the photo in the viewfinder I thought nothing of it, but when I downloaded it with the rest of the pictures I saw how beautiful it was. Each goose in the same motion with a wonderful asymmetrical composition. Like notes of music on a sheet of paper. A rhythmical song similar to the honking that attracted me in the first place. And the clouds in the background really capture the cold dampness of the autumn day.

Peonies

One of the reoccuring themes that are posted on this blog are the photos that have been taken in my mother's garden: "Baba's Garden". The variety of plants, insects and other creatures that live in Baba's garden are awe inspiring. Baba is constantly working to create art in the garden where my family meets regularly for dinners, sports, political debates and all kinds of activities that bring us together. Baba's Garden is a special place in my heart and in my daughter's who has spent many hours of her childhood playing, dreaming and growing here. The photos of Baba's Garden are a hommage to my mother and a way to capture the garden forever.
